Metastorm Releases Enhanced Version of Process Discovery Software
Baltimore, MD – July 15, 2008
News Facts
- Metastorm, a leading provider of Business Process Management (BPM), Business Process Analysis (BPA), and Enterprise Architecture (EA) software for aligning strategy with execution, today announced the release of version 6.4 of Metastorm Discovery™.
- Metastorm Discovery is an interactive process discovery software tool designed to enable faster and more accurate collection of data, process understanding, and process metrics that can be used to drive business process modeling, improvement, and optimization efforts. Version 6.4 introduces enhanced capabilities for wireless data collection, improved reporting capabilities, and tighter integration with Metastorm ProVision® for process modeling and optimization
.
An example of how organizations can use Metastorm Discovery: To quickly engineer a process metric study, organizations provide process participants with a hand-held PDA interface to self-record their activities and related events, generate standard process analysis reports, and then directly use the new data in Metastorm ProVision for advanced modeling and further statistical analysis.
Process discovery is becoming increasingly critical as organizations try to better understand their human-centric processes prior to undertaking business process improvement and automation efforts. Metastorm Discovery eliminates the need for scarce, high-cost business analysts or consultants to sit, observe, and time workers and manually aggregate and analyze the collected data – instead all of it can be automated and participant-driven through Metastorm Discovery.

“Metastorm Discovery provides a unique approach for organizations looking to collect and analyze process data and performance metrics on critical human-centric business activities. The software’s PDA interfaces allows users to capture data on activities as they happen, greatly improving the accuracy and timeliness of the information. The software’s integration to Metastorm ProVision, Microsoft Excel, and other analysis and reporting tools allows customers to make meaningful business decisions based on the information gathered during the discovery process.”
- Mark Bateman, management consultant, Mutual of Omaha

Each major function within Discovery has a separate tab. The "Activities" tab is used to establish all the
activities (process and non-process) to which participants might record their time. It also is used to
select if any activity is involved in transaction tracking, has a pop-up survey after it’s executed and set
the values of activity attributes for reporting.

| |
The Virtual PDA (looks and acts like a separate physical PDA) runs on a PC and is an optional means for
study participants to use for process data collection. |
| |
|
|
The names, tenure, hourly cost (used to cost every activity “click”) and participant attribute values (used
for analysis to correlate things such as level of training versus activity productivity are all established on
Discovery’s “Participants” tab.
|
Each time an activity is executed, Discovery can display some real-time questions to collect root cause
type data about circumstances for that particular execution. Questions may be in any form. |
| |
An example of a two question survey from the Virtual PDA after a participant clicked they had
completed the Blacklist activity.
|
|
| |
One of about 30 standard one-click reports, the Detailed Activity Table shows the number of clicks,
number of completed units, average time per unit, etc. for all activities in the study, including nonworking
time (Out of Study) and PDA interaction time (both usually removed in other reports).
